The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc)  is engaged in cleaning sewers, streams, and drains, in sectors that tend to have recurring floods during the rainy season.

The operations are carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Works, community boards, and the Urban and Home Cleaning Authority.

Carlos Rumbo, director of the entity, said that the most important of the activities is to sensitize people and instill in them not to throw garbage, or waste in the sewers or rivers. He added that 75% of sewer collapses are due to the accumulation of garbage.

The operations began in the Juan Díaz district on March 27.
