Public offices in David were evacuated in the late afternoon of Friday, August 17 following a 5,9 magnitude earthquake recorded in Chiriqui and Bocas Del Toro. A strong earthquake was recorded in the province of Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro.

Its epicenter was in the Golfitos region of Costa Rica. Golfito, is in the  Costa Rican province of Puntarenas, bordering Panama. The director of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), José Donderis said that structural evaluations were underway, but reported that by early evening no deaths or injuries had been notified.
