The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI-C) at the level of districts and townships -prepared using the 2010 Panama Population and Housing Censuses-, published recently, shows that the 10 townships with the highest number of poor people are in the provinces of Panama and West Panama.

They are Chilibre, Pacora, Tocumen, December 24, Arraiján, Ernesto Córdoba Campos, Las Cumbres, Arnulfo Arias, Burunga and Belisario Porras reports La Prensa.

Meanwhile, in the Ngäbe Buglé region, there are 19 townships where almost the entire population lives in multidimensional poverty.

Luis Carlos Herrera, sociologist, and researcher at the Center for Scientific Research of Social Sciences of the Universidad Santa María La Antigua,said that the situation is more serious than that expressed in the document, as the conclusions are based on census data from 2010.

The Ngäbe Buglé region has traditionally presented the highest levels of poverty in the country. In 19 townships, almost 100% of the population is poor.
