Compliance judge, James Corro, denied on Tuesday, February 11, a request for house arrest filed by the defense of the former Director-General of Revenue, Luis Cucalón currently serving an eight-year prison term for embezzlement and corruption of public servants.

Before  being sentenced  Cucalón gained additional notoriety as he  avoided justice by remaining in one of  Panama’s most expensive private hospitals

Defense attorney Calderón told the judge that Cucalón suffers from chronic diseases and that he does not receive the necessary treatment at the El Renacer prison.

According to the Judicial Branch, the petition was denied because the defense did not submit an updated legal medical report and  also did not present a domiciliary offer

The judge ordered  Cucalón to  have a new legal medical evaluation by the staff of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences and gave the defense 20 days to present the report adding: “With this report, I will  determine if you can remain in prison or not..”
