Five former employees of Panama’s  Penitentiary System (SPN) who were part of a corruption network in the system, are among nine people sentenced to between 40 and 90 months behind bars in the  jails they once worked in

They were convicted of corruption of public servants and fraud, in the First Criminal Court. Investigations began in August 2016, after a  network of corruption in the SPN was denounced.

The network changed precautionary measures, such as release and transfer, reduction of sentences and alteration of documents to detainees in La Joya prisons, La Joyita and the Female Rehabilitation Center.

Investigations by the Prosecutor's Office presented and confirmed that relatives of an inmate of the Women's Rehabilitation Center were swindled by the group, which received a payment of $8,000.
