Protests over the impending eviction of Palestinian families from East Jerusalem ended in violent clashes on Saturday, injuring some 200 Palestinians and 17 Israeli police. The protests erupted after Friday prayers on the final day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, after Wednesday clashes over the eviction issue. Egypt and Jordan condemned Israeli authorities’ action at Islam’s third-holiest site, and the Palestinian Authority appealed to the U.S. to pressure Israel to deescalate its response to such protest before things “reach a stage that cannot be controlled.”
