Survivors of the US invasion of Panama, on December 20, 1989, have created a common front to support the implementation of the report of the OAS Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IACHR) condemning the United States and recommending compensation to civilian and non-combatant victims.
The announcement came at a Thursday, July 4 meeting at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Panama.
“The case José Isabel Salas Galindo and others vs the United States is a call for unity and solidarity to support the implementation of the recommendations of the report.
and validate the struggle of the survivors," said lawyer Gilma Camargo, who called on relatives of the dead, and disappeared and people with serious injuries to provide information to be included, while we plan the next hearing to follow up on the implementation process. "
“Frente Salas” will honor the memory of Dionisia Meneses Castrellón de Salas, killed by a missile, while cleaning rice at the door of her house in the city of Colon, on December 22, 1989 and her husband José Isabel Salas Galindo as referents of all the people who were attacked and those who are part of the legal struggle that earned international condemnation against the United States. The creation of an invasion research institute and activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the invasion was also confirmed.
== The true reason for the invasion was to remove the military dictatorship from power.== Noriega had been taken prisoner by officers in his army just days before the invasion. When they offered him to the Americans, they were turned down. Noriega's bodyguard arrived shortly thereafter and freed him.
Jack... according to the U.S. Army... civilian deaths were 1,000,.. according to the U.N. the number of innocent civilian deaths was 500, ...according to America Watch it was 300... "official Pentagon figures" it was 516 civilians... wounded Panama civilians was 2,000 to 3,000 per various hospital reports... meanwhile the 'official' death toll of those american soldiers was 23. All of this info is on the internet and regretfully the figures given are not all the same. The bottom line is that is was inexcusable that so many innocent civilians were killed or wounded... and even today the U.S. Military has not given reasons why. And those U.S. Soldiers got away with indiscrimate killing or wounding of civilians.
For Jack.... Poor American soldiers blood. How many? What about the inocent Panama civilians.. non combantants that were killed. How about the homes that were destroyed? Your trying to aquate current highway deaths from whatever cause with the cost of American soldiers blood is ridiculous and stupid at best. Try writing something that makes sense.
I am personally shocked the the insensitive comment by Jack. Noriega was in Panama City so tell me why was in necessary to Kill innocent civilians in Colon. In 1993 a documentary won an academy award, called the Panama Deception, Watch it.
The true reason for the invasion was to remove the military dictatorship from power. Panamanian civilians were not able to oust the dictatorship and the US was not about to allow Manual Noriega or any other leader of the “Panana Defence Forces” to be the head of government on Jan. 31, 1999. I remember the dark days of late 1989 and recall that most Panamanian were if favor of intervention since the US initially supported the Torrijos dictatorship. There was jubilation among the citizenry when the fairly elected President Endara was sworn in. It is sad that civilians were killed but the figure is less than the amount that the leftists claim.
you people are full of sh*t, the invasion was sanctioned by the President of Panama at that time and its become clear that Panamanians have a short memory as the USA eliminated brutal dictator and restored Democracy in Panama at the cost of American soldiers blood and treasure so quite your whining. More people die each year in Panama from foolish drivers, speeding cars and cell phone use while driving, while don't you do something about that?
