OPINION: Panamas perverted justice system

Those [Panamanians]investigated for high-profile corruption offenses have revealed a sinister truth: there is a differentiated treatment by the judicial system that favors them.
Dozens of suspects have escaped the action of the Public Ministry, simply taking a plane, many times private, hiding from the investigations, until their skilled lawyers manage to ensnare the process thanks to complacent judges.

The rules are extremely flexible and what is worse, the interpretation given to them by judges and magistrates to benefit plunderers of hundreds of millions of dollars from all Panamanians. These actions are not considered in any country of the world as a legitimate exercise of due process or the right of defense.
In the fourth year of legal proceedings against those allegedly responsible for high-profile acts of corruption, hearings are suspended, judges paralyze the investigations and the magistrates of the Supreme Court sit on the files. It is clear that the Judicial Organ and the legal profession have a lot to answer to society for impunity in the country. …LA PRENSA, hoyporhoy, Apl.9

Mhogan, all the shouting you read in my comments are bombastic. Its like a drum beat synchronizing all the worlds pain in the wind. Facts are facts that brings out the truth hidden for years. There is some good in every one but the evil intents are ongoing. Lasting a lifetime with historical consequences. Resulting in the destruction of a small nation like Panama. Facts, truth in the face of evil with nations and corrupt leaders... destroys the security and confidence and unfortunately... Political elites with immunity...impunity...self enrichment... Believe they are helping those around them basically inner circles. Panama is no exception with an innocence and trust for Political parties that themselves take the public funds for undisclosed agendas of keeping power. How can the shouting stop?

Mr. EUGENE is totally and completely correct in his statement. No one and I mean no one should be denied of their constitutional right to due process. To hold anyone in jail or to convict based on gut feeling and or hearsay without STRONG evidence represents INJUSTICE.

While all this attention is being focused on the corrupt administrators of the people's money, business, and justice, there is nothing being said about the common people who are also affected. A woman held in jail for at least a year, accused of murdering a stillborn infant, was recently released based on a simple forensics report. There is no acceptable explanation for a cause of death forensics report to take more than a year! If the state can't present evidence in a more timely manner, they have no right to hold people as criminals while they either withhold evidence or fail to process it. Laura Michelle Reese has been held over 7 years and has now been convicted, all with a complete lack of evidence against her. There is no acceptable explanation for holding, or convicting, anyone, without evidence. A judge's guess and/or gut feeling that 'she had to have known' is the basis of this conviction, but that's not justice. People all over this country are being denied justice by not only a corrupt legal system, but one that has also been left dysfunctional, unreliable, unaccountable, and thoroughly unjust..
