Government and Transit Authority not responsible for deaths on burning bus

The families of 18 people burned to death on public transit in 2006, will not be compensated by the State or the Public Transit Authority.
Third Chamber of Administrative Litigation of the Supreme Court yesterday, April19, exonerated the Transit Authority (ATTT) and the Panamanian government from paying $10 million dollars in material and moral damage caused by the death of Rosa Rodriguez Vargas, in the burning bus 8B-06 .

The ruling was made by Judge Alejandro Moncada Luna.

In his ruling, Moncada Luna indicated that Law 14 of May 26, 1993 provides that the carrier be liable for all damages occurring to the user, caused by him and his agents, the driver or any person involved in this service.

The court said the considered opinion that the responsibility for this case was proved by the ruling of April 28, 2008 by the First Circuit Court, which declared the driver of the bus Prospero Ortega and owner Ariel Ortega, criminally responsible, for the crime of manslaughter and injury to the users of bus 8B-6.They were sentenced to 4 years in jail.

The burning of the bus route Corredor-Mano de Piedra occurred on October 23, 2006, killing 18 passengers and severely burning many others.
