A 43-year-old father/grandfather of his daughter’s two-year-old child has been charged with the rape of the girl who is now 16 and again pregnant. Gelacio Rodríguez on Wednesday, January 9 was ordered to serve six-months provisional detention for the duration of the investigations in Santa Fe North Veraguas

Authorities are investigating if he or a brother of the girl is responsible for the new pregnancy.

Moving from the USA to Panama meant I had to accept the culture here as part of my integration. I've done so successfully in Germany, Italy, and the UK. I cannot accept and reject the sexual moors here that support incest as normal. Religion is the prime reason for this and Catholics are still sucked into the religious scam of the Vatican. The Vatican is the problem and there is no indication they will correct their shortcomings. The last sound these abusers should hear is the sound of a shotgun loading a shell.

These individuals may well be ignorant, as opposed to sick, starting with the facts that NOBODY teaches sex education, the reason incest is not a good idea, why girls of 13 are not capable of giving informed consent, or simple respect for a woman's right to say no. There ARE cultural traditions in this country that accept incest as common, children as objects to be used by adults for sex, and pregnant children. If the Catholic church was onto it's real job, it would be insisting on education programs to negate these beliefs

This does not mean that he is sentenced to only six months prison. Provisional detention is pre-trial detention only and simple means that he will be sitting in prison, without the option of bail, while the prosecutors and police investigate and build the case before he goes to trial. The law allows prosecutors six months to prepare their case, the limit is intended to allow somewhat speedy trials, but of course that is a relative term in Panama. The prosecutors can ask for extensions as required and the person will stay in preventative detention. However the real point the prosecutors are trying to nail down as stated in the article "Authorities are investigating if he or a brother of the girl is responsible for the new pregnancy." Therefore the only real question is whether he will soon have one of his relatives keeping him company in detention as he awaits his court date. Assuming he is charged under Article 174 of the penal code, the mandated sentence for this crime is minimum eight years to a maximum of 12 years in prison. I have briefly translated and summarized the relevant parts below, or for those inclined the relevant section starts on page 133 of this document http://www.oas.org/juridico/pdfs/mesicic5_pan_res_ane_act_corr_2.pdf "Who through violence or intimidation have carnal access with one's person or another sex, using their genital organs, will be punished by imprisonment for five to ten years. The penalty will be eight to twelve years in prison, in any of the following circumstances: 1. When the violation causes the victim impaired psychological capacity. 2. When the act causes the victim physical damage that produces disability of up to thirty days. 3. If the victim becomes pregnant. 4. If the act was perpetrated by a close relative or guardian. Article 175 further amplifies the penalties under specific circumstances. The behaviors described in the previous article, even if it does not mediate violence or intimidation, will be punished with imprisonment of ten to fifteen years if the act is executed: 1. With a person who is less than fourteen years of age. 2. With a person deprived of reason or meaning or who suffers from illness or has disability physical or that prevents you from consenting or that, for any other reason, does not can resist the act. 3. Abusing your position, with a person who is detained or confided to the author for that I guard her or drive from one place to another. 4. In a person who because of his age he can not consent or resist the act."

Myrna, sex education does not prevent rape. The 'church here' is blind to this crime as it was and is about priests raping boys and girls under the cover of God. Where was the victims Mother? He need to be surgically castrated and jailed for 30 years.

"girl who is now 16 and again pregnant." " ... Gelawas was ordered to serve six-months provisional detention ... So a mere slap on his hands for incestuous rape. Yes people and expats. That's the way it's handled in Panama.

These are sick individuals, do you think it's fair to judge and marginalize all Catholic families based on this model. Rather doubtful that having sex with one's daughter or sister is considered normal in any segment of society.

The church here says the parents should teach their children about sex education instead of the schools. This is family education?
