Environmental concerns as Panama flagged cruise ship sinks

OCEAN DREAM A Panama-flagged cruise ship sank  off the coast of Thailand, on Sunday afternoon , February 28.

The Ocean Dream was built in 1972 and is owned by the Chinese shipping company Shanghai Eastime Shipping. It can accommodate 2,000 people.

"The authorities are monitoring the ship for possible fuel leaks that can contaminate water and cause great economic and environmental damage. During the accident, there was no crewmembers on board. Authorities are investigating what happened and plan a lawsuit for the costs of removing the boat," reports  the web site Newsmaritime.com,

The vessel had been anchored off the coast of Thailand for a year. The web site reported that authorities have been trying to contact the owners to have the vessel moved, but have not been able to do so.

The Panama Maritime Authority has not yet  issued a  report on the sinking.
