An earlier submission to the National Assembly by a member of the ruling party that protesters face a year in jail for blocking streets was ratched up to two years  last night and approved.

Marcos Gonzalez, a member of Democratic Change, took up the proposal  presented earlier by Augustine Sellhorn, to punish with  those who obstruct free passage with a year in jail.
Gonzalez reworked the proposal and presented a paper calling for up to two years in jail, with a minimum sentence of six months.
The opposition PRD bloc called the proposal a "jailhouse" proposal seeking to "intimidate" the people.
