August reached three-year homicide peak as drug wars rage

August 2021 ended with the highest homicide rate in the last three years, according to the  National Police Director, Jhon Dorheim, during an accounting of crime statistics.

Dorheim detailed that August closed with a total of 48 homicides, 19 more than those registered for the year 2020 when a total of 29 murders were perpetrated and 3 more than in 2019, when 45 murders were registered.

He said that 83% of these crimes were committed with firearms and that most of them were related to drug trafficking.

He said that crimes related to domestic violence registered a decrease, detailing that in 2020 a total of 1,018 cases were reported and that until August 2021 there were 786.

He also stated that the crime of theft marked a decrease with 281 in 2020 and only 231 until August of the current year.

He reported that during  August the Police managed to capture 43 people linked to homicides and that 60% of crimes are solved within three months.
