OPINION: When is a joke not a joke?

552Views 70Comments Posted 30/04/2018

Urging the comedian who performed at the White House correspondents’ dinner to apologize for an uncontroversial joke sends an incredibly dangerous message writes Arma Mahdawi  in The Guardian.

LET ME TELL you a few deplorable things that happened in America this weekend. Nearly 43 million people woke up in poverty in the richest country in the world. And 3.2 million Americans woke up without health insurance. A further 36 people died because of gun violence, bringing the total number of gun deaths in the US this year to 4,627.

All of that is deplorable. What is in absolutely no way deplorable or shocking or outrageous or unacceptable is a joke about eyeshadow. You probably know what I mean, it was headline news on Sunday. But if you missed the controversy, the summary is that a comedian called Michelle Wolf made a gag about Sarah Huckabee Sanders at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner in DC. “I think [Sanders is] very resourceful,” Wolf said about the White House press secretary. “Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye.”

Wolf was referencing Sanders’ well-documented history of defending Trumps brazen lies. Earlier this month for example, Sanders defended Trump’s racist claims that women from Central America are raped at “levels that nobody has ever seen before”. She also justified Trump’s entirely unfounded claims that “millions and millions” of illegal votes are cast in America’s elections by saying that the president “strongly feels” that is the case. Sanders lectures the press about accuracy but spends her days helping Trump fuel racism and hate with shameless lies. Sanders, in brief, is a morally bankrupt person and Wolf was holding her to account.

Since when did 'perfect smokey eye' become an insult, America?

Sanders may be a morally bankrupt person but guess what? She’s also a wife and mother and it is really very mean for Wolf to stoop so low as to mention Sanders’ eyeshadow. Can you imagine the devastating psychological impact of having a comedian reference your affinity for a smoky eye? Can you imagine how damaged her kids must be by the reference to their mum’s makeup?

Personally, I can’t imagine any of this, but it seems plenty of other people can. MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, for example, tweeted: “Watching a wife and mother be humiliated on national television for her looks is deplorable. I have experienced insults about my appearance from the president. All women have a duty to unite when these attacks happen and the WHCA owes Sarah an apology.”

Maggie Haberman, the New York Times’ White House correspondent, similarly tweeted: “That @PressSec sat and absorbed intense criticism of her physical appearance, her job performance, and so forth, instead of walking out, on national television, was impressive.” Haberman made sure to tag Sanders in the speech so that the press secretary would be sure to know just how outraged she was. Andrea Mitchell from NBC also tagged the press secretary in a tweet stating that an apology is owed to Sanders.

Insulting someone’s appearance is never a good look, no matter how awful a person they may be. But nothing in Wolf’s routine could possibly be construed as “intense criticism of [Sanders’] physical appearance”. And absolutely nothing in Wolf’s routine demands an apology to the press secretary.

If anything, the likes of Haberman, Brzezinski, and Mitchell owe America an apology. They’re all incredibly smart women with extremely important jobs. They’re supposed to be holding power to account, not sucking up to it. Rushing to defend Sanders under a veil of faux-feminism is beneath all of them.

What’s more, urging Wolf to apologize for what should have been an uncontroversial joke sends an incredibly dangerous message. It suggests that it’s not OK to criticize the president and his people. And it lends credence to Trump’s repeated claims that the mainstream media is out to get him.

Last week the US dropped two places in the Reporters Without Borders 2018 World Press Freedom Index, with Trump’s continuous attacks on the media cited as a reason for the decline. We live in a very worrying time for free speech. Indeed, on Sunday it was reported that the US Department of Justice removed a section about the “need for free press” from its internal manual. Now more than ever, journalists need to be courageous.

The media needs to make sure it is speaking truth to power, not kowtowing to the powerful. However, as Wolf mentioned in her speech, even the liberal media is under Trump’s spell. “You pretend like you hate him, but I think you love him. I think what no one in this room wants to admit is that Trump has helped all of you. He’s helped you sell your papers and your books and your TV. You helped create this monster, and now you’re profiting off of him.”

Wolf is absolutely right. We all ought to do a lot more soul-searching about how we’re covering the Trump administration. That should have been the headline that came out of Wolf’s speech; not controversy about eyeshadow.

Wolf’s words should have inspired introspection amongst the press, not a liberal backlash. So, please, spare me the faux feminist outrage about Sanders. It was just a joke. The response to it, however, has been no laughing matter.[The  performance is on YouTube]

It made it's point quite effectively. It made up a name for this web site that it hopes others find clever and humorous. There are many people who enjoy jumping in and shouting a word or two they find funny. Don't let it bother you, it's this person's way of communicating, you won't change it because it doesn't see any reason to change the style of it's online interactions as they satisfy it's need to feel as though it has been a participant as opposed to standing on the sidelines. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm guessing FECES DEL TORO is what it believes is a clever way of saying bullshit? There is another brave soul with a fake name and no picture who calls itself "muse" that voted the comment up, so apparently it finds humor in it.

As I said before, you and your side kick have gotten off the topic off the conversation about our lying president, a lying press secretary who burns the facts, and the comments made by miss Wolf. I am not surprised by your thin skinned remark about your wish for people like myself to stop rebuking your unsubstantiated comments and personal attacks when you find yourself boxed in a corner with your rhetoric. Have no fear, I will continue to be here just to be a pain in your side. This is fun debating with inferior minds of the likes of yours and your side kick. Keep that diarrhea running from your mouth, you will find me to be your worst nightmare. Now see if you can find your way back to the ash burning lies. By the way, Sarah took heart of Wolfs ash comments, no black eyes at the press conference today. See, some good came from the ash roast.

mhogan, what's truly amazing is that as they fixate on one issue after another, this man just continues to bull forward accomplishing things that would be amazing for any man, even one who is supported by his party. I actually enjoy, as you probably have figured out, debating the geniuses who criticize President Trump on a daily basis. As a dummy I find testing their intelligence, or lack of, so much fun. Richard, I'm just so tired of President bashing! It's like the left talking points never stop; they keep repeating past misdeeds or words spoken and that's so pathetic to the point of being an obsession. Yes, Trump is an imperfect man, now move on! There are so many issues -- good things the President has done and world matters that need addressing. Give this "imperfect" man a chance; so far DURING his Presidency, he has by far done more positive than negative things. He's weird, I think, but he's effective. Would the Left prefer a polished politician who screws up the economy, race relations, foreign relations, etc or a less-than-polished rambling off at the mouth imperfection who puts America and it's interests first? You and I, Richard, know that answer and it's ALL political with them.

The man has a pattern of repeating the same mistakes over and over. As a result he has developed a problem with the truth. Won't hear the truth and won't speak it. He hides behind lies and alternative facts to cover up the mistakes. Also to cover up his own extremist attitude. The U.S is getting smarter as his "base" has become dumber. Well, the base was dumb to begin with, but still becoming worse. The base will suffer the most and it's rather sad since most of them are harmless and desperate. Not talking about the alt-right extremists right now, but the folks who really have high hopes. It's pitiful really. ?

I don't. I'm concerned about how he governs our country. I don't care what he did or said years ago. I'm sure I have said some things in my earlier life that I regret and wished I hadn't said as I'm pretty sure if you were honest you would say the same. To be perfectly honest you would have to have been very forgiving to ignore many things Hillary said and did in her life but that isn't why I didn't vote for her. She was basically inept and in no way could I picture her running this huge country effectively. I went with who I thought could do the best job and that was Donald Trump. Now that he is the President I feel it is my duty to respect and support him every way I can. Had Hillary been elected I would have defended her as well. I'm just glad she never had the opportunity.

That's the reason he is a billionaire and you are on Panama News trying to understand how a real leader negotiates. The point you are missing is that after 25 years of Presidential tries this guy is getting the job done. The fact that you don't understand his tactics simply indicates that you are not smart enough to understand negotiation 101. I personally don't care how he gets the job done as long as the U.S. and the World benefit and that's the bottom line. He's getting the job done. "President Obama did not engage in childish bullying by claiming "his button was bigger"." No he offered Russia a re-start button and offered to make deals with him after the election. I have no patience and do not suffer fools either in business or in life. We have had our fill of touchy, feely losers who are more concerned about what the world thinks of them than they are about caring for their own citizenry. Putting America first is President Trump's idea of how to govern and I for one am with him 100%. It's about time. We had 8 years of social grace and sensitivity politics and look where that got us. Have you ever thought about the thousands of people and companies Trump destroyed and the lives he ruined in this process of the abuse of the system? I think not, you sound as cold hearted as Trump. Trump will prove to be the worst President in American history. Trump is devoid of couth, lacks social grace, and is too insecure to be an effective leader. All of your unsubstantiated comments now puts into question your puffing about your entrepreneurship. It is too bad you were not one of those contractors Trump refused to pay. What is so really funny about this whole dialogue is that everyone is missing the point. Wolfe's comment about the eye shadow was something that the Trump lovers latched onto as they saw the truth of most of her comments. The "smokey eyes" was actually a complement. “Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye.” See??? Wolfe said to create the "perfect" eye shadow. Not "ugly". To address comments from the likes of Richard Charron is a total waste of time and effort. The most vile comments made about how women kook have come from the so called president.. More vulgar comments have come from this president, remember; "Grab her by the P" As to abortion, who gives anyone the right to tell or decide what is best for a woman's body. These two faced politicians who are fighting against abortion the most, are the same ones who advocate abortion to their extramartial partners when their marriage or political careers are on the line. I agree, most of what Michelle Wolf had to say was not funny but rather on point. The press secretary is one of the biggest liers in the country, only bested by Trump himself. As to the statistics about unemployment, first of all who's statistics, Trump's. We saw how that came out with his presidential inauguration crowd. Hahaha. To show lower unemployment, the game is to use those who drop off the unemployment rolls because they have used up their benefits. This does not mean they got a new job. Even if they did get a job, they are making far less than they were before they lost their jobs. The jobs that have been outsourced are gone for ever. It is unprofitable to do business in the US. Why is the United States the only county in the world that sanctions police killing people without accountability? We see a whole judicial system failing before our eyes from the cities courts to the US justice departnent. Justice is suppose to be blind, not political. Our Supreme Court is a joke. Richard Charron, the point you missed entirely is that America is a nation that has many people living in poverty, have no health insurance, have extremely high gun violence deaths and yet who some people get upset about, like yourself, are not those unacceptable facts but a make up joke. It would seem many priorities are in the wrong place. By the way, your post as many inaccurate statements. When you research please use a variety of information sources and not one which only fits your political agenda, that way maybe you will actually come to the truth: For example, companies that have greatly benefited from the tax decrease did not pass it on to employees. The tax rate for individuals is only temporary for 4 years at which time we will all face vastly increased taxes to pay for the huge addition to the federal deficit cause d by trump's tax plan. However, the benefit to companies is permanent. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/14/upshot/us-employment-women-not-working.html https://www.npr.org/2018/01/08/576552028/fact-check-trump-touts-low-unemployment-rates-for-african-americans-hispanics

Was there not a single editorial that would condemn Wolfe's outrageous performance. Her performance was outrageous, unfunny and totally our of bounds even for an uncivilized Liberal "jokester". I would be surprised if she hasn't begun ringing the death knoll for this event. Can you imagine a Conservative President attending this event ever again. Did the writer miss the "joke" about knocking a baby out of the womb or as most civilized people would say murdering a baby. Hardly appropriate in a civilized world.
