People around the world, including Panama will be switching off their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 27, to mark Earth Hour.
When the World Wild Life Fund (WWF) first launched the initiative in 2007, there were two million participants in Sydney; Australia.
After that first attempt, more than 6 thousand cities, including Panama, and one billion people have joined this movement for climate change.
Large sectors of the scientific community and various environmental groups are concerned over  the disruption of the normal cycles of nature, caused by Global warming.
The earth Hour is an attempt to create awareness as a necessary step to stop thie process and try to recover some of the damage being caused in the past 50 years.

According to the WWF, by 2008, 50 million people switched off their lights in over 400 cities, and this year of 600 cities and over a 10 billion people will particpate

Many people in Panama have decided to join the demonstrationThe activity begins at home, the idea is that for an hour all the lights, televisions and electronic equipment for the environment.

In the ruins of Panama Viejo from 7:00 pm where the tower will go out and attendees will light candles for an hour, said Carlos Espinoza, of the WWF.

Other participants include : La Prensa, HSBC, McDonalds,  the City of Knowledge, National Environmental Authority, MarViva, the National Association for Environmental Conservation, the Office of the First Lady and the General Secretariat of Energy.
Reducing one kw per hour prevents the emission of 546 grams of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.

The call is not only to raise awareness of the population but to motivate governments of the world, to achieve more decisive conclusions than those reached in Copenhagen last December.
