DENGUE cases in Panama so far this year are moving close to the total for all of 2013, and chikungunya fever, transmitted by the same mosquito, has also surfaced for the first time.

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health, there have been 4,613 cases of dengue fever in 2014. Nine people have died from the disease, and there have been 20 cases of severe dengue.
There have been only 168 cases less than in all of 2013, when there were 4,781 cases and eight deaths.
 33 cases of chikungunya fever have been recorded 13 of which were contracted locally.. Both diseases are transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
