Avianca confirms $10.6 billion Airbus order
THE LARGEST ORDER in the history of Latin American aviation for 100 planes costing $10.6 billion has been signed by Colombian airline Avianca and Airbus.
Founded in 1919 in Avianca was the first airline in the Americas, and is the second oldest in the world.
The Airbus agreement, comprises A319neo t, A320neo and A321neo, and contributes to Avianca’s objective of maintaining the youngest fleets in the region, replacing aircraft operating currently in their hubs in Bogota, Lima and San Salvador with aircraft with increased fuel efficiency.
"The crystallization of this contract will allow us to consolidate our strategy of improving flight experience in local markets and globally. Supported by efficiency, technical reliability and comfort of the A320neo will continue to advance in the process of airline modernization, while still connecting and contributing to the sustainable development of the region,"said Fabio Villegas CEO of Avianca Holdings SA,
John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers, said: "The A320neo provides maximum efficiency at the lowest cost, making it especially suitable to operate within the Avianca network and demanding airports in the region. "
The A320 family is the product line of best-selling single-aisle in the world, with more than 11,500 orders to date and more than 6,400 aircraft delivered.
The newest member of the A320 family, the A320neo incorporates numerous innovations, as
new generation engines and "Sharklets" devices on the wingtip that together allow more than 15% fuel savings from the first day, and 20 by 2020.
With over 3,600 orders from 70 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320 Familyhas captured a solid 60 percent share of the market.
To date, the A320neo program has 345 firm orders from six customers in Latin America: Avianca, Azul, Interjet, LATAM Airlines Group, VivaAerobus and Volaris.
Currently more than 550 Airbus planes are in service in Latin America and the Caribbean. And has delivered more than 60 percent of all aircraft operating in the region.
