While North America maintains its traditional role as the biggest supplier of tourists to Panama, South America is catching up fast.

In an analysis of the origin of visitors by country, the United States remains the main source of tourists tourists, followed by Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, and Spain.
An article in La Prensa reports that "Historically, the USA was the region that brought the most tourists to the country, but after the economic crisis affecting the income of U.S. and Canada, the story has been different.
In the first half of the year South American tourist arrivals grew by 24%, out performing the 14.5% from the USA, and the 9.6% from Europe.
Panama hopes to attract more tourists from the south and it is negotiating with tour operators in Brazil and with airlines to operate direct flights to Panama. "
