Streets across the city were blocked as violence erupted between police and demonstrators on Tuesday (March 16.)

The National Police (PN), following the government’s new get tough instructions  denied that they had provoked the clashes  with the construction workers’ (SUNTRACS).

Police confirmed that at least 200 workers were detained following protests in different parts of the capital.

The authorities say they will continue with action to ensure free transit, but traffic jams spread across the city as drivers tried to avoid the main trouble spots, Cinta Costera, Avenida Balboa and Calle 50

SUNTRACS spokesmen blamed the Government and Justice Minister, Jose Raul Mulino, and National Police director, Gustavo Perez, for the events that occurred today.

Union leader Saul Mendez told local media, that several people were detained only simply for handing out "flyers" against tax reforms, and accused the police of having a provocative attitude.
Mulino’s reaction was to order provincial governors to be strong against all demonstrations that obstruct free movement and social peace.
