A 22-YEAR-OLD AMERICAN woman tourist is in stable condition in  Santo Tomas  hospital after a shooting incident in Casco Viejo involving an Institutional Protection Service (SPI) agent  at dawn on Friday , April 28,

SPI director Eric Estrada said  that the incident occurred while the agent was trying to arrest a taxi driver on Calle 9 reports La Prensa

According to an  El Siglo report, the taxi driver failed to stop when ordered to by the agent who then fired at the vehicle, but a bullet hit the young woman passenger who had just left an establishment between Calle 8 and 9.

Estrada said the case will be investigated both internally, through the Directorate of  Professional Responsibility, and by the Public Ministry. The  SPI provides security for the presidential palace and the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy is monitoring developments.
