PANAMA’S  elderly population is expected to continue to rise until   it reaches 24 percent of the total population in 2050 says a report from the country’s comptroller.

The document suggests that the proportion of people older than 60 years will begin to grow at a rapid pace.

It suggests the creation of institutions dedicated to the care of this population as well as the implementation and development of activities that promote their protection.

Former Director of Statistics and Census Dimas Quiel said that the aging population will bring changes that will impact Social Security, the economy and the health system.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Francisco Javier Terrientes, said he was aware of this situation and the country has started addressing it by increasing the number of hospitals and promoting healthy lifestyles
