Panama’s historic role as a conciliating nation has led to the country’s election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The organization announced the unanimous decision on Friday, November 28.

Panama is represented on the council, based in Geneva, by Ramon Morales Quijano.

The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean presented Panama as a candidate for the post.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Panama was nominated due to "the historic role that our country has played in the world as a conciliatory nation, and as a recognition of the policies and programs of the current administration."
