New demand for Assembly action on Judge scandal

THE INDEPENDENT political group Movin has demanded National Assembly President Adolfo Valderrama take action on the allegations made against Supreme Court Justice Alejandro Moncada Luna.

The group of influential citizens, sent a letter to Valderrama saying it is concerned and disappointed with the lack of action so far, reports La Prensa The judge has been surrounded by rumors of corruption after it was revealed that he purchased two apartments worth $1.7 million since taking office.
Leaders of civic groups and legal associations have demanded action since the allegations were made. The Assembly is responsible for investigating judges in these cases.
Movin also said it would be closely watching the selection of the next comptroller, saying that person is not only responsible for safeguarding the assets of all Panamanians, but in carrying out audits for accountability "It is a position that will return trust to us in our institutions," the letter said.
Movin asked Valderrama to share his plan of action on these issues to ensure the Assembly plays its essential role as an oversight body.
"We have high expectations about the work that the government must do especially in the restoration of institutions and transparency, and will be proactive and vigilant that our authorities comply with the mission they have been assigned," emphasized the group.
