The president of the opposition Revolutionary Democratic Party, (PRD), Francisco Sánchez Cárdenas, says that President Ricardo Martinelli is making plans to introduce a Constitutional reform that would allow him to serve more than one consecutive term in office reports La Prensa.

Similar suggestions have been made by other groups concerned that Martinelli is gathering the reins of power into one hand.
Sanchez Cardenas said that Martinelli's strategy has involved abuses and threats that are designed to weaken the other branches of government, which will then allow him to proceed with a Constitutional reform. Sánchez Cárdenas stressed that Martinelli has sought to control all the branches of government, including the Supreme Court, the Public Ministry, the National Assembly, the Electoral Court and the media.
Sánchez Cárdenas also accused the president of wanting to destroy the PRD, and all other political parties except his own.
