LAWYERS  for Mayer Mizrachi, wanted in Panama on embezzlement charges and  arrested in Colombia last week on an Interpol red alert from Interpol have  appealed the decision of the Second Superior Criminal Court denying bail.

The Public Ministry is investigating Mizrachi for alleged embezzlement for allegedly failing to fulfill a $211,000 contract he received from the National Authority for Government Innovation to provide encryption technology for security officials.

Lawyer Silvio Guerra, on behalf of Mizrachi, said that his client "is facing a case where it is clear that he has not committed any crime."

He said that this situation is, at worst a case of breach of contract.

He referenced e-mails sent by Mizrachi to Irvin Halman, current administrator of the authority, in which the businessman tried to rectify the situation.

"He never received a response," said Guerra.

Halman said on Monday that Innovative Venture, Mizrachi's company, did not fulfill the terms of the contract, which was issued shortly before the 2014 elections. Mizrachi is the son of the brother-in-law of former President Ricardo Martinelli. The fathwe fled Panama in Martinelli’s private jet.

A number of former authority officials have also been charged in the case, including former Director Eduardo Jaén.
