60 homeless after Cinco de Mayo blaze

SIXTY PEOPLE were made homeless by a fire  in one of the buildings on Plaza Cinco de Mayo, Calidonia, on Sunday July 24.

The fire started at around 10.30 am, and firemen subdued the blaze after two hours. The incident caused widespread local traffic delays.

Gabriel Isaza, deputy director of the Fire Department, reported the number of people who have lost their homes. The building also housed some businesses selling hsndicrafts.

One of them Alfonso Lechón,  an Ecuadorian who has done business in the city for 15 years . She said she lost about $80,000 in merchandise.

Iaazo says an investigation of the cause of the fire is under way.

Preliminary findings indicate that it started in Apartment 17.
