THE FORMER Colón government building, defined by some historians  as the first public building erected in Panama following the separation from Colombia is to get a $4.5 million  renovation.

The funding comes from the National Cultural Institute (INAC).

The Institutes Director of Historical Heritage Wilhelm Franqueza said two public bidding events were held, but both were abandoned because of perceived security concerns in the area. So  the agency concluded a direct contract with the firm Arquitechne, S.A. which has experience in restoration of historical structures.

The restoration will be finished in 2017and house offices and a cultural center.

The building was constructed between 1904 and 1906.

Guidelines have been  laid down to ensure that it will retain its original appearance and will not replicate mistakes made with some buildings in Panama city’s Cacsco Viejo.
