PANAMA and Guatemala, and six other countries added their names to a joint statement on Syria signed by the U.S. and its allies on September 6 urging a "strong international response" the alleged use of chemical weapons by the regime of Bashar Al Assad.

According to polls US armed intervention in Syria is against the will of the people and widely believed to be rejected by Congress in an upcoming debate. The other signatories were Georgia, Kuwait, Malta, Montenegro, Poland, and Portugal reports the EFE news agency.

The statement condemns "in the strongest terms" the chemical weapons attack on August 21 on the outskirts of Damascus, attributed by the U.S. and its allies the regime of President Assad, and calls for "a strong international response". None of the latest signatories have the capability to support a US attack but the statement "supports" the efforts by the United States and other countries to "strengthen the prohibition of chemical weapons."
U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed making a “limited” military action in Syria in retaliation for the use of chemical weapons and has asked congressional authorization.
However, Obama said Monday in interviews with major television networks that he will suspend action and evaluate a possible military strike against Syria if the Assad regime accepts the Russian proposal that its chemical weapons stockpile moves under control of the international community.
