OVER 30% of Panama’s children live with a single mother. With a population well under 4 million, Panama has 410,000 children living with single moms says an official study of the National Institute of Statistics.
The study was carried out in conjunction with technicians from the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef).

It is the same study that revealed last week that 316,000 children are subject to some level of physical abuse and that 62,000 women feel that domestic violance can be justified in certain cases.
The survey canvassed 9.882 households across the country. There are just under 1.3 million children in the country, and about 31 percent of them live with a single mother. Of that total, 53 percent live in extreme poverty. In 9 percent of the cases, the child's father has died.
Panama ended 2013 with a population of 3,864,170 people, which represents an increase of 61,889 compared to 2012.
The male population is greater, with 1,951,231 men, representing 50.49% of the total, compared to 1,912,939 or 49.50% women.
Panama shows a moderate population density, with 51 people per square km.
