IN A GLOBALIZED world there are few institutions that serve as a mechanism to prevent impunity and fight corruption.
International judicial cooperation is the main tool for countries like Panama to collaborate in the fight against transnational crime, as in the case of bribes paid by the Brazilian construction company Norberto Odebrecht.
In addition, Panama has implemented these same mechanisms in the extradition request of former President Ricardo Martinelli.
The effectiveness of the international system of cooperation depends on the good faith and active will with which the country provide information and collaborate dynamically with the justice of friendly nations.
In contemporary society, impunity has no place and opacity is the main shield of the corrupt.
The choice of our institutions is very clear: either we are a force for good and justice or simply are complicit in these crimes.
Panama has the opportunity-duty- to become a world leader in transparency. It benefits all.
