Hoyporhoy, La Prensa Dec.14
ON FEBRUARY 24, 1849, a newspaper in English began circulating in Panama, which would be the direct ancestor of La Estrella de Panama.
In its pages they have registered events from the
the watermelon riot until the expansion of the Panama Canal.
In other words, we have a privileged witness of our history. Beyond its cultural value, it is the illustrious medium for
which journalists of the likes of Gaspar Octavio Hernández and Leonidas Escobar chiselled the daily news.
Both La Estrella and El Siglo, years later, have survived
different epochs and vicissitudes, a further proof that their existence is essential for the exercise of freedom of information and expression in our country.
The function of media, is vital to life in in general, serving as a platform for the exchange of ideas, diversity of opinions and, above all, h ave a fundamental purpose in guaranteeing citizens the right to receive information.
In this critical time, the solidarity of all is essential to guarantee the news balance that Panama needs. Neither La Estrella nor El Siglo can be hostages of different agendas than those who defend the fundamental rights of our society.
In this difficult time, they have the support of Panamanian society, and colleagues.
Freedoms are not negotiated, much less freedom of expression. Do not let us succumb to the plurality of voices of the country, because it is the essence of democracy that is in play today.
