WHILE USAGE of Panama’s existing ports continues to decline, Environmental organizations are battling the creation of a new facility in Cristobal, Colon.

The new multipurpose port is scheduled to be constructed on Isla Remo Largo.

The marine structure will have a "direct impact" on 657 hectares of which 153hectares are covered by mangroves, according to the Environmental Impact Study.
The document indicates that the mega port seeks to meet the demand for shipping services and fuel supply giant postpanamax vessels, once the canal expansion is complete.
Experts on environmental issues Stanley Chang and Antonio Heckadon believe that the project requires more consultation, as its implications are "harmful to the environment."
