H1N1 claims child victim in Panama, more cases confirmed

H1N1 influenza has returned to Panama leading to the death of a two year old child. The toddler was admitted to the Pediatrics Hospital with a severe respiratory infection and died of H1N1 influenza on Sunday, July 22.

Without giving further details about the death of the infant, a Social Security Fund (CSS) press release said that there are nine reported cases of influenza AH1N1 in the Pediatric Hhospital, seven of whom are classified as probable and two confirmed. 

The CSS has  reinforced the the emergency department staff,  A special area outside the emergency department has been set up to treat patients with the infection  In addition the CSS staff are working on prevention and advocacy, including  administering seasonal influenza and pneumococcal vaccines to infants, the elderly and staff working in health facilities in hospitals,  and clinics.

Authorities recommend that the genersl population take preventive measures such as avoiding contact with the sick or people who have fever and coughs, and frequent hand washing.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and avoid kisses and greetings with people with flu symptoms.
