Panama milk consumption rising

In four years, production increased from 150 million liters to 200 million liters, while annual per capita consumption has increased from 93 to 100 liters from 2012 to date.

Although yet to reach 135 million liters per year recommended by the World Health Organization, preference for consuming milk shows an u pward trend among Panamanians, which creates opportunities in the livestock sector which dedicated to dairy products.

Carlos Alvarez, a member of the board of the Association of Dairy Producers of Panama (Agrogalpa), told Prensa.com that "... 'This increased consumption of milk is very important for traditional livestock producers and arouses interest from other entrepreneurs, because besides meeting local demand, we may face the challenge of competing in the international market. '"

"... The Panamanian herd is about half of a million heads, of which 25% is geared towards the production of milk."
