The implementation of the US-Panama Free Trade Agreement,(FTA) could change the retail landscape in Panama and allow the entry of companies like Walmart into the local market.
Bill 515, under discussion in the Assembly today, redefines the term "wholesale" to allow American companies to sell their products directly to customers, provided they invest more than $3 million and provide a service.
Currently the retail business in Panama is exclusively for nationals, but modifications, following the FTA will , change the landscape, and chains like Walmart would have an opening.
