Residents of the community of Miguel de Borda in Colón have filed a lawsuit inPanama’s Supreme Court against the Petaquilla Gold mining project. over the approval of an environmental impact assessment. The suit is based on alleged technical deficiencies the residents have identified in the document. Miguel de Borda resident Patrocinio Mora said it was filed over concerns residents have about the quality of drinking water near the mine.
Residents are also asking for the court to order an impartial review of the incident two weeks ago when mining was suspended because a containment pond was close to overflowing. The pond is used to store cyanide contaminated water used at the mine.
